We aspire to promote healthy lifestyle choices by educating students on the importance of physical activity and nutrition through classroom and building based activities.  Let’s Go! is a community initiative launched by United Way.  We are working with the individual buildings within our district to increase student and family awareness of the benefits of proper foods and healthy activities in our everyday life.

During the 2009-10 school year we received a Let’s Go! grant which was used towards new toys for the playground and established Fun Fridays.  This Mabel I. Wilson program focused on the idea of healthy activities through organized games and reinforced responsibility at the end of playtime.  Please consider volunteering at recess during Fun Fridays.  You may volunteer weekly or monthly – whatever works for you!  Two recess volunteers to facilitate and supervise the use of this equipment would be helpful.  The time commitment covers recess times from 11-12:25 with time on either side to set up and take down the activity.  A specific area will be designated on the playground for the highlighted activity of the week. There are items to set up obstacle courses using cones, hurdles and hoops.  We have new balls, Chinese jump ropes, step’n stilts, parachutes and a few more items.  Various game rules, jump rope songs and ideas will be provided. Volunteers are required to check in at the office, don a vest so you are visible to the children on the playground, and then check in with playground supervisors.  Children will be educated in the classroom about recess volunteers and will be on the lookout for you!  Once a group is established a schedule with dates and times will be provided quarterly.

Our attentions for the 2010-11 school year will turn towards nutrition – eating healthy and eating locally!  If you are interested in these efforts please contact, Gloria Nicholson.
