Peter and
the Wolf
-
April 2007
The first grade classes attended the Portland School of Ballet’s performance of Peter and the Wolf. The dance students brought this classic story of the boy who cried wolf to life. “I am so glad the sweet bird got away!” “I loved when the wolf ate the duck. She really hid behind the wall, but it looked real.” “The wolf jumped wildly. I wish I could jump that high. Dancers are so strong!” Many of the classes loved the show and wished it were longer!
The PTO is assisting with funds to bring Bob Bloom to the First Grade at MIW. Bob provides a beautiful array of drums and percussion instruments for everyone to join in the rhythms that give rise to some of the most joyous music of Brazil, Cuba, Africa, and North America. “Drumming About You” is a hands-on, participatory event that is accessible to all ages, and is inclusive of elders and people of challenge. Participants are engaged by the same elements of music-making that create an experience of success for everyone: group participation, individual contribution, communication, and goal setting.

Celebration of Literacy and the Arts - March 2006
The Mabel I Wilson School and the Drowne Road School enjoyed a Fine Arts Festival starting February 27 through March 24. Each week highlighted a different focus, music, theater, visual art, and dance.
~Week One: Music
First grade attended a joint performance by the
Greely Madrigal Chorus and the GMS String Ensemble.
~Week Two: Physical Theater Our very own Theresa Cameron-Raymond presented Move 'n Groove to Literature to our first grade students. The children, through verbal prompts, put movements and actions together and eventually recreated a popular book the children recognize.
First and second grade participated in the Look at ME program recently established by the Portland Museum of Art. They studied a well-known work of art, which was then tied to a similarly themed popular children's book. Books chosen for this program include Lobsterman by Dahlov Ipcar, Atlantic by G. Brian Karas, and The First Feud by Lynn Plourde. The students then produced a piece of work using techniques from the artwork and book.
Tie-dyed T-shirts Children will soon be wearing tie-dyed t-shirts during classroom and grade level events. Parents were asked to send in a plain white t-shirt, and the PTO supplied all the dye needed. These t-shirts will be used throughout the school year, including on Field Day.
First Grade Enrichment Past Highlights Audubon Field Trip The First Graders went on a field trip to the Maine Audubon in Falmouth to study Maine mammals and birds. Maine Wildlife Park Field Trip
The children were able to enhance their study of mammal with a trip to the Maine
Wildlife Park. There, the children went on a hunt for moose, coyote's,
deer, bears, and mountain lions to name a few. They drew pictures of the
