Carey Armstrong Ellis  -  April 2008

The Second Grade and Multiyear Classes participated in an interactive presentation with author/illustrator Carey Armstrong Ellis.  Carey read one or two of her published books to each class - Prudy's Problem and How She Solved It was a hit! Carey talked about her process, drew a picture from one of her books, answered lots of questions, and then read from her current work-in-progress.  Students had the option to work on a response sheet to Prudy’s Problem…as well as a word search for vocabulary fun.  Everyone felt she was informative and enjoyable.

Celebration of Literacy and the Arts - March 2006

The Mabel I Wilson School and the Drowne Road School enjoyed a Fine Arts Festival starting February 27 through March 24.  Each week highlighted a different focus, music, theater, visual art, and dance.

~Week One:  Music

The first week second graders were introduced (and tried to play!) the kantele harp, taught by Sarah Cummings-Ridge of the Greely Middle School.

~Week Two:  Theater

Some of the second grade rooms have chose to have a "Freaky Friday" assisted by Dr. Seuss and a few parent volunteers.  They also studied various techniques in the area of improvisation.

~Week Three:  Visual Art

First and second grade participated in the Look at ME program recently established by the Portland Museum of Art.  They studied a well-known work of art, which was then tied to a similarly themed popular children's book.  Books chosen for this program include Lobsterman by Dahlov Ipcar, Atlantic by G. Brian Karas, and The First Feud by Lynn Plourde.  The students then produced a piece of work using techniques
from the artwork and book.

Past Highlights

Colonial Days

Colonial Days is a fun day for the children and teachers.  All of our teachers dressed in Colonial attire and many of the children did also.  The children rotated between classrooms and learned how to do such things as candle making, tinsmithing, rug braiding, cross stitching, and learned how to make a Colonial toy.  This is an awesome unit for the children as they learn about what it was like in the Colonial days.  Our Children learned that the children of Colonial days played many games such as marbles, jacks, pick up sticks and hopscotch.  They didn’t have the amenities that children today have.

Old Fort Western Field Trip

The Second Graders went on a field trip to Old Fort Western.  Old Fort Western is in Augusta, was built in 1754 and is America's oldest surviving wooden fort.
