Backstage concert of the Nutcracker - December 2005 The fourth grade classes attended a Backstage concert of the Nutcracker with Maine State Ballet on December 1st at the Merrill Auditorium in Portland. This Backstage Concert provides an opportunity for students to get a sneak preview of an upcoming ballet. Maine State Ballet takes children on a tour of the creation of a ballet, from costumes to choreography, sets to scenery. They sit in the Auditorium and enjoy excerpts of the dancing, with special explanations of the secrets on creating ballets.
Tales of a Fourth
Grade Nothing - October 2005
In October the PTO helped send the 4th Grade to The Children's Theatre production of Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing based on the book by Judy Blume. It's a humorous look at family life and the trouble that can only be caused by a younger sibling. The performance was an exciting accompaniment to the book which starts the year off for most of the 4th grade classes.
Fourth Grade Enrichment past events
Visiting Poet Paul Janezcko met with students on December 8 and January 6. At a full grade assembly he discussed his background, both personal and professional, and shared works that he has published. He then visited each classroom individually where the students were able to work on a couple different styles of poems.
Portland Symphony Orchestra Field Trip - March 2004 The PTO Sponsored a trip for all fourth graders to hear the Portland Symphony Orchestra play Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. This was a particularly special event. It was the culmination of an exciting unit connecting Art and Music. Mrs. Olson and Mrs. Healy worked together to design this special unit. In the fall Mrs. Healy taught students about the elements of music and the piece Pictures at an Exhibition in music class. meanwhile in Art class students were learning about the elements of art and abstract representation. Then, while listening to Pictures at an Exhibition students used line, shape and color to represent what they heard. The media used was Cray-pas, ink and watercolor. The results were marvelous. There are 14 movements in the piece of music, each class responded to tow of those movements. One artwork representing each movement was sent to the PSO. At he concert a slide show was shown while the musicians played. There were 14 artworks from NYMS displayed along with work from many other schools in Maine. We were very proud of our students as learners, an audience and artists. This was a terrific opportunity to make learning connected and relevant. ~ Lynda McCann Olsen Square Dancing The 4th grade class always has a large unit on the Pioneer period. One of the activities they learn is square dancing with Skip Brown. He comes in to work with the kids for two days and they have a great time. Chewonki of Maine visit - Too Much Trash!
