Sixth Grade Enrichment 2006-07
Wassamki Springs end of year outing is a fun
social event for the students. The PTO will rent the campground and
furnish the food and the kids will have fun with various outdoor activities. Brook Trout - May/June 2007 The 6th graders are raising brook trout once again this year. The PTO helps the class with the "fish release" activities. This includes a t-shirt for each student, a fly fishing expert to come in and hold demonstrations, the chance to look at some insects, and a "Earth Jam" performance during the afternoon. Medical Round Robin - April 2007 This
event is held each spring in connection with the 6th grade science unit on the
human body systems. Students will have the opportunity to meet with area
specialists with jobs related to the human
body. This is a great chance for students to see the connection to real careers
and their current unit of study.
Sixth Grade Enrichment 2005-06
Wassamski Springs Field Trip - June 2006 This annual event is the end-of-year celebration for the 6th grade. Students, teachers, and parent volunteers visit Wassamski Springs Recreation Area for a great day of picnics, volleyball, swimming and community building. Medical Round Robin - April 2006 Students are mixed up between neighborhoods and travel to three different presenters during the morning of programming. Medical professionals from the community and Maine Medical Center discussed diabetes, asthma and the respiratory system, orthopedic surgery and bone growth, pediatric surgery, and the cardiovascular system. Medical Round Robin supports the extensive study of the human body the 6th grade does each year. Storyteller Michael Parent - December 2005 Michael Parent, storyteller, author, musician and juggler, draws upon his Franco-American heritage to perform a unique blend of stories and songs in both French and English. His shows include songs accompanied by various instruments, folktales and an original story that address issues related to growing up, such as dealing with bullies, siblings, friends, peer pressure, etc. Past Highlights: Chewonki of Maine Visit Chewonki visited GMS in October as part of an outreach program entitled "Owls of Maine". This program discusses the habits and adaptations of Maine's native owls. Slides and discussions were supported by a detailed look at some very interesting visitors...live owls! This program very capably supports the 6th grade ecology unit and the students' study of owl pellets. Cinco de Mayo Celebration Another exciting annual event, the 6th grade Cinco de Mayo celebration supports the Latin American studies which are a major part of the social studies curriculum. This year's event was held entirely at Greely Middle School. Students were treated to games in Spanish and flamenco dancing taught by the very talented students in Ms. Erwin's Greely High School Spanish courses. Presenters from the community and from Greely High School discussed the Aztecs and Montezuma, Safe Passage (the program to benefit the children of the Guatemala City dumps), and what it's like to be an AFS exchange student. The school cafe provided Mexican food as part of the day's lunch choices, and piņatas and sombreros were enjoyed by all 6th graders. Ed Webster - Author Visit Ed Webster is a local mountain climber and author who visited the 6th grade in January to share slides and stories of his adventures including his ascent of Mt. Everest. Ed's presentation asked students to consider how far one should push oneself while pursuing a goal. This visit supplemented the 6th grade Language Arts curriculum of which adventure fiction is a large part. It also helped to meet Character Education goals.
Jon Gailmoor - Artist in Residence
Jon Gailmoor is a songwriter/entertainer who specializes in presenting to middle school-age children. Jon works with students on storytelling and songwriting techniques. The culmination of his visit was a sixth grade concert during which students were able to share with their families the results of three days of hard work!
