Mabel I. Wilson School
Celebration
of the Arts - March 2008 The third annual Celebration of the Arts was celebrated by the 1000 students, grades K – 5, of the Mabel I Wilson, Drowne Road and North Yarmouth Memorial Schools in March 2008. In 2006 Luann Lawler, MIW Music Teacher, developed and coordinated this extensive month long arts program, made up of visiting artists and performers representing a variety of genres, to supplement the art and music curriculum of the students at the MIW School. Also in 2006, Margo Harrington, Co Chair of the MSAD51 Arts Alliance created the Art & Literacy Program. Throughout the month long Celebration of the Arts a number of volunteers visit each classroom to present a grade specific lesson which combines a read aloud book with the examination of complementary art work created by well known artists. Following this discussion a piece of student artwork is created. This artwork is exhibited at Family Arts Night, an annual arts event hosted by the Arts Alliance. more
Monmouth Theater: - May 11, 2007 Members of the Monmouth Theater will visit the Mabel I Wilson School and the Drowne Road School on Friday, May 11 to present Paul Bunyan and Other Tall Tales. This traveling performance introduces viewers to great men and women in a larger-than-life collection of America’s tallest tales. In this collection of stories the audience meets, besides Paul Bunyan, railroad hero John Henry, sharpshooter Annie Oakley and fun-loving Johnny Appleseed to name a few.
Celebration of Literacy and the Arts - February 27 - March 24, 2006 The Mabel I Wilson School and the Drowne Road School held a Fine Arts Festival starting February 27 through March 24. Each week highlighted a different focus, music, theater, visual art, and dance. Highlights include a residency for third grade with puppeteers Figures of Speech; a musical program with Music Together; and Bringing Books to Life with Fiddlehead Center for the Arts for the Kindergarten. Please visit the grade level enrichment pages for more information.
Ferdinand the Bull at Merrill Auditorium - 2002 Students and staff from Mabel I Wilson attended a school wide field trip to Merrill Auditorium in Portland to see a Reading Rainbow presentation of the play Ferdinand the Bull. This was our first all school event sponsored by the PTO. The kindergarten students even went to school for a full day so they could be included in this special presentation. This delightful story about a bull who would rather smell the flowers that fight was appropriate for all ages and the PTO was proud to be able to expose every child at Mabel I. Wilson an opportunity to travel to Portland and experience the Merrill Auditorium.
