Peter and
the Wolf
-
April 2007
Ms. Boire’s class attended the Portland School of Ballet’s performance of Peter and the Wolf. The dance students brought this classic story of the boy who cried wolf to life. “I am so glad the sweet bird got away!” “I loved when the wolf ate the duck. She really hid behind the wall, but it looked real.” “The wolf jumped wildly. I wish I could jump that high. Dancers are so strong!” Many of the classes loved the show and wished it were longer!
The Multiyear Students traveled to a Shakespearean Theater in Monmouth, Maine to see a production of the classic Aesop's Fables. The Theater At Monmouth’s production of Aesop’s Fables is written in a lively style, often using rhyming couplets. It features colorful costumes and sets, combined with outrageous characters yet the professional level of quality, strong acting, and intelligent writing are sure to engage the children.

The Multi-year Class visited the Cumberland Post office to learn more about their community. They viewed the rental boxes and a variety of stamps. The Postmaster told about the history of the Post Office - how the mail used to come by stage coach, where the old Post Office was, how Postmasters were chosen in the past and how the mail is sorted. When they returned to the school the students set to working designing a stamp of their own.

Past Highlights:
Old Fort Western Field Trip In early November , the students visited Old Fort Western and the Maine State Museum where they got to try their hand at weaving on an authentic loom. They also chopped wood and learned how a colonial kitchen was different than their own. photo submitted by Connie Russell
Australian Guest Multi-year studied Australia in January and had a visit from Linda McConnell who lives in North Yarmouth but is from Australia. She taught the kids some fun Australian words and told them what it was like to live there. They also had a fun Australian Beach party with authentic food... and most kids were very good about trying all the new food!
Author / Illustrator Visit In March, author/ illustrator Lisa Jahn-Clough came for two days to share her love of writing and illustrating with the kids. I think she inspired some young writers!
Chebeague Island Field Trip In the spring the students go to Chebeague for a day to visit with the multi-year classroom and see what it is like to go to school on an island!
Colonial Days This is a fun day for the children and teachers. All of our teachers dressed in Colonial attire and many of the children did also. The children rotated between classrooms and learned how to do such things as candle making, tin-smithing, rug braiding, spinning, butter churning and how to make a Colonial toy. This is an awesome unit for the children as they learn about what it was like in Colonial days. Our Children learned that the children of Colonial days played many games such as marbles, jacks, pick up sticks and hopscotch. They didn’t have the amenities that children today have. photos submitted by Connie Russell
Insect Study Holly Hurd , a local parent, brought in Manduca bugs at different stages of development so the kids will get to see the life cycle of a bug close up.
