PTO Sponsored Programs

Parent University

The Parent University Program is a series of informational workshops offered to parents, teachers and community members on a broad variety of topics related to raising children, education, and social issues affecting our families.  The programs are offered several times a year and are held in the evenings at schools throughout the district.  Working in connection with volunteers from the high school, PTO provides childcare on a reservation-only basis, free of charge, during Parent University presentations.    Parent University Schedule

Community Experts

The Community Expert Program was started in 2002 as a way to create a database of volunteers who are willing to come in and share their knowledge of certain subjects with the students of MSAD 51. We have so many talented people in our own community and hope to tap into this resource with this program. This is still a work in progress and is a joint effort between Melissa Skahan, the district volunteer coordinator , PTO enrichment coordinators and the teachers of the district. If you have you have an interest, hobby or skill that you would be willing to share with the students, please let us know under the volunteer section.

Mentor Families

The Mentor Families program matches new families in the district with "experienced" families willing to help answer any questions or concerns that may arise, whether related to school, driving directions, the recommendation of a doctor or dentist, or where to find pizza!

Book Publishing

Book Publishing gives students in grades 1-3 an opportunity to become the Author, Illustrator and Publisher of their very own book.  Student write stories in the classroom year round as part of their writing curriculum.  Volunteers work one-on-one with the student to enter the stores into a computer program.  The computer program creates double sides pages for a 6x5 inch book.  Illustration and graphics are frequently included in the book.  The pages are then inserted in a hard cover.  The result is a book written by the student and printed in a very readable format.  Because it is a hard-bound cover, these books last for years without any special care.
